About SCTO

Need some pointers to get you started on writing that critical document? The document templates here will help you get started with everything from writing a software requirements spec to figuring out what good code looks like.

User Interface Design Tool (PowerPoint)

The SCTO User Interface Design Tool is designed to allow you to quickly create interface mockups of an application (web, desktop or otherwise) that you are building.

Its built on top of Microsoft PowerPoint to make it easy and accessible to everyone.

Software Requirement Document Template

This is a document template which you can use if you’re writing a Requirements Document for a software project. Copy the contents of this document into your own, and then work through each section to fill in the necessary information.

The goal of this document is to make sure that you outline the requirements of a project – everything the software needs to do. You need to be complete and make sure nothing major is omitted, but you also need to be judicious in your use of detail. Too little and you haven’t covered everything; too much and people won’t read it, which is almost worse than having not covered everything.

FlightView Pro Interface Mockups

FlightView Pro is a fictional application designed to help demonstrate the software development process.

These mockups, built using the StartupCTO Interface Design Tool, show some example screens from the app. They are designed to complement the Vision Document and Software Requirements Document.

Software Vision Document Template

This is a document template which you can use if you’re writing a Vision Document for a software project. Copy the contents of this document into your own, and then work through each section to fill in the necessary information.

The goal of this document is to make sure all the stakeholders in a project are on the same high-level page. For you, the author, that means keeping the document simple and using lots of bullet points, tables and pretty pictures. Otherwise, people won’t read it. If it ends up being more than 2-3 pages, you’ve probably written too much.
